What a year for games! People keep asking me for a good game for New Year’s Eve. Here are a few of the bestselling games of the year that are sure to keep your friends, family, and neighbors entertained on New Year’s:
Telestrations– The classic game of telephone sketched out. Basically, it starts with you picking a word on the suggestion card. You draw what you thought it looks like on the first page provided erasable sketch book, and pass it on. The next player has to write their guess of what they think the picture is of. Then the next person draws it, and the process repeats itself until it is done. The guesses and illustrations get more ridiculous as the game goes on. Designed for 4-8 players. Players 13 and up.
Tenzi- This game sold out almost as soon as it came in. It’s simple, and the basic essence of the game is to roll and collect dice of the same number until your ten dice are all the same before the other players do. And then there are some crazy rules added in, like stealing dice from the other players, stacking the dice and starting over again if it topples, or adding up…. Customers have told us they like this game because it’s fast, it’s easy, and it keeps players engaged through the entire game. It can be played with as many players as there are different colored dice, which the Tenzi set provides.
Wackee Six– A competitive game of solitaire. For fans of Nertz looking for a challenge, this is it because it has wild cards. The box also provides you with a full set of cards (only numbered 1-12) of a different color for each player. Like Tenzi, games of Wackee Six go quickly and are very competitive. It can be played in teams or just singles.
Dominion– Sick of long games of Settlers of Catan on New Year’s Eve? (We still love you, Cousin Alfred) Perhaps you are just looking for a new challenge of that same caliber. Try Dominion. We couldn’t put it into better words than the product manufacterers, so here’s what they had to say:
Play Dominion from Rio Grande Games for a fun card came of strategy, luck and deck-building! You are a monarch, like your parents before you- a ruler of a small pleasant kingdom of rivers and evergreens. Unlike your parents, however, you have hopes and dreams! You want a bigger and more pleasant kingdom, with more rivers and a wider variety of trees. You want a Dominion! In all directions lie fiefs, freeholds and fifedums. All are small bits of land, controlled by petty lords and verging on anarchy. You will bring civilization to these people, uniting them under your banner! But wait! Several other monarchs have exactly the same idea. Race to get as much of the unclaimed land as possible, fending them off along the way. To do this you will hire minions, construct buildings, spruce up your castle, and fill the coffers of your treasury! Dominion finds each player trying to build a more profitable deck. Play cards from your hands to take action or purchase new cards and money!
