  1. Love your store! Books AND music!

Thanks for featuring some of my books today! And what a special day it is! It’s the first day of National Poetry Month, April Fool’s Day … and Joseph Haydn’s BIRTHDAY!

In memory of Joseph Haydn (1732-1809)

Because there were no electronic recorders,
Haydn taught a parakeet to sing back his melodies…

Deep in the shadows of your room
where even the moon was a stranger,
    you played your perfect flute
in front of the gilded cage.

In the silent depths of night
your senses stood still as memory,
your patterned breath, as piercing as light,
taught a captured bird a human tune.

    Your breathless woodwind waited,
    a feathered song took flight
soaring higher than man or bird
    had ever dreamed, or heard.
