Games, Games, & More Games

I don’t know about you, but my favorite tradition on New Years Eve is to play games with all my friends and family. Here at the Book Table we have tons of fun games for you to play. Here are just a few:

Wackee Six

Wackee Six takes 6 decks of different colored cards each person or team is responsible for.  Then the person or team starts with 12 cards they have to get rid of to call Wackee Six! Six cards are placed face up in front of you and six cards are face down. Unlike solitaire everyone is trying to get their cards on the SAME WACKEE PILES.This makes for a game full of fun and excitement as the players race to get as many cards as they can into the middle.

Each player flips over 3 cards at the same time and tries to play the top card just like traditional solitaire. If it doesn’t play, flip three more. Remember the goal isn’t to get rid of the cards in your hand, but to play those cards to get rid of the first 12 laid down. Once a player has gotten rid of their pile of 12 cards, they yell WACKEE SIX! Then all the cards in the middle are gathered and counted. Whichever player/team got the most cards in the middle wins.

Snake Oil

In the Old West, the sly snake oil salesman had a special talent. He could get the most skeptical customer to buy the most dubious products. Now it’s your turn.  Choose one player to be the first “Customer” and have that player pick a Customer Card. The other players quickly combine two Word Cards form their hand to create something for the Customer. Each player persuades the Customer that their item is the best. The Customer picks the one they like the most and that player wins the customer card!

Settlers of Catan

How fast can you match? That’s the key to BLINK. Shape, count, or color – any way you can match it, do it fast to get rid of your cards. You need a sharp eye and a fast hand to win this lightning-fast game! Play all your cards to win Rapid-fire matching action Great travel game, too Includes 60 symbol cards and instructions for regular and quick play.

The Settlers of Catan from Mayfair Games is an award-winning strategy game where players collect resources and use them to build roads, settlements and cities on their way to victory. The board itself is variable, making each game a little different from the next. Each round of The Settlers of Catan is intended to keep three or four players ages 10 and above engaged for up to 90 minutes.

Anomia plays off the fact that our minds are positively brimming with all sorts of random information; things to eat, pop songs, websites, etc. Sure, under normal circumstances, it’s easy enough to give an example of a frozen food, or a dog breed, but you will find that your brain works a little differently under pressure! The directions are simple. Draw a card from the center pile and flip it over. Does the symbol on your card match one on another player’s card? If so, you must quickly face-off with the other player by giving an example of the person, place, or thing on their card before they can do the same for yours. If you blurt a correct answer out first, you win their card and drawing continues.

Sounds simple, right? Wrong, Wild cards allow unlike symbols to match, increasing the number of things you must pay attention to. Cascading face-offs can occur when you hand over a lost card revealing a new top card on your play pile. All this adds up to a high-energy, hilarious play experience where everyone is involved at all times. Easy to learn, fun to play over and over again, Anomia will have any group of friends, family, even perfect strangers, shouting and laughing out loud as they try to beat each other to the punch.

Five Crowns

Five Crowns is a fast-paced ingenious card game. Its double deck contains 5 suits (the stars are new), but it has no aces or twos. This unique deck gives you many more options for arranging your hand into sets and sequences–the challenge is to see them make the right combinations, be the first to go out, then watch the others scramble as they get one last chance to cut their losses.
Five Crowns, with its beautiful cards, is easy to learn. It starts with 3 cards and 3’s are wild. The next hand has 4 cards and 4’s are wild, and so on. You’ll need luck and skill throughout the game because even in the last hand a worthy opponent can come from behind and win. Remember, “the game isn’t over ’til the Kings go wild.”

Ticket To Ride

Ticket to Ride is a cross-country train adventure game. Players collect train cards that enable them to claim railway routes connecting cities throughout North America. The longer the routes, the more points they earn. Additional points come to those who can fulfill their Destination Tickets by connecting two distant cities, and to the player who builds the longest continuous railway. For 2 to 5 players ages 8 and older. Playing time: 30-60 minutes.

Remember to stop by the Book Table and get the perfect game for your New Years party. For questions, call (435) 752-3055.

Children’s Christmas Books

Still in need of a few Christmas books? Here are some perfect ones to read to the kiddos the week of Christmas.

The Spirit of Christmas by Nicky Benson

Young Drew loves Christmas! There are Christmas carols, candy canes, colorful lights, and sparkling presents under the tree. “Do all children get this many presents?” Drew asks Mama. “Sometimes families can’t give presents, even if they really want to,” Mama replies.

Drew decides that he wants to do something for the children whose families don’t have presents to give, so he writes a letter to Santa asking for his help. Santa sends Drew a very special gift to help spread Christmas cheer – and Drew sees his Christmas wish come true!

The Little Shepherd’s Christmas by Carol Heyer

This is Reuel’s big chance to prove that he can tend sheep just as well as his older brothers. All he has to do is keep a watchful eye on his little flock. But distracted by his brothers’ teasing, he looks away just long enough for a little lamb to wander. Following a frantic search, Reuel finds his missing charge . . . and finds himself in the midst of the biggest announcement ever made. The Christ Child has been born, and Reuel is one of the first chosen to hear the news! After racing through the streets of Bethlehem, his misstep becomes a blessing when he encounters the Baby who will one day become the Shepherd of Men.

This tale of the first Christmas, told from the viewpoint of a little boy to whom young readers will relate, is illustrated with gorgeous, detailed paintings by Carol Heyer. Her art showcase the sweetness of the child shepherd and the reverence of the story. Here is a book that both entertains and informs without ever straying from the meaning of the holiday.

The Sparkle Box by Jill Hardie

The moving story of an uncommon gift and how giving to others shows a little boy the true meaning of Christmas.

Sam is so excited about Christmas! He’s thinking about his Christmas list, anticipating holiday parties, and puzzling over one very mysterious gift — a sparkly box sitting on the mantel above the fireplace. In the midst of the festivities, Sam and his family participate in various acts of kindness to others. On Christmas morning, when Sam finally opens the Sparkle Box, he finds only slips of paper that record the family’s good deeds. Sam’s parents explain that the things that they’ve been doing for others are, in fact, a gift for Jesus — for Jesus said that whatever we do for the least of these, we do for Him. This heartfelt story will inspire readers to adopt this faith-centered tradition in their own homes.

Katy’s Christmas Gift by Bernadette Watts

Katy sets out in the snow to visit the new baby born in the innkeeper’s stable. She is bringing gifts: a loaf of bread, her cat Sasha and, most importantly, her favourite toy — a wooden bird whistle. But Sasha doesn’t want to play in the cold snow, and the animals of the forest eat the bread. Soon Katy’s carefully chosen gifts are gone — except the most special one of all.

As the snow gets deeper and she gets colder, Katy wonders whether she’ll ever have the chance to give her gift to the baby? Katy’s Christmas Gift is a heart-warming and original version of the Christmas story for young children. Bernadette Watt’s lively illustrations are full of colour, light, joy and festive feeling.

The Night Before Christmas by Clement C. Moore

Creatures of all shapes and all sizes will be stirring with laughter in this overly decked out, Christmas-splendored illustrated picture book!

Christmas 2015 Staff Picks: LDS Department

Next on this year’s list of staff picks for Christmas books, our LDS deparment manager Mary Ann has chosen 8 of her favorite Christmas books.

This is the perfect book for you to read with your kids the night before Christmas or even on Christmas Day!

C is For Christmas by Tonya Skousen Arenaz

C Is for Christmas Tonya Skousen Arenaz What is Christmas? Find the answer in twentysix simple yet meaningful verses, one for each letter of the alphabet. From singing angels and jingling bells to quiet reflections on Nativity scenes, these vibrant pages celebrate all the festivities of the season while reminding us that the greatest Christmas gift can’t be found under the tree. Featuring stunning art by renowned artists Howard Lyon, Sandra Kuck, Joseph Brickey, Jean Monti, and Ben Sowards and introducing beautiful art from newly discovered Mark Missman, this richly illustrated book renews favorite family memories and inspires new ones.

These books are similar to pamphlets in that they’re only 10-15 pages long and they can fit in an envelope. These are the two we’re especially fond of this season, but we do have quite a selection. We call these our “visiting teaching” books because they’re small, not very expensive, and they tell a great story about the true meaning of Christmas.

The Perfect Gift by Henry B. Eyring

In this new Christmas booklet, President Henry B. Eyring shares some of his favorite Christmas gifts, both given and received. Through stories of assembling a barometer with his young son and creating an intricately carved wooden chest for his sweetheart, President Eyring reminds us that it isn t the price tag that determines the worth of a gift; the best gifts offer love and joy and they frequently involve help from others.

Giving joy . . . is rarely found in solitary effort, teaches President Eyring. And perhaps most important, invoking faith in the Savior, the Creator and source of all lasting happiness, invites the pure love of God, which is the greatest of all gifts and the sure source of enduring joy. However we choose to give this season, President Eyring reminds us that the best gifts of the season share love and the testimony of Jesus Christ and His restored gospel.

Cherishing Christmas by Toni Sorenson

It’s the most wonderful time of the year. But for Santiago, Christmas is just another bitter reminder of the emptiness he’s felt since the loss of his beloved wife, Maria. He anticipates another holiday nursing the unbearable ache of loneliness, until one extraordinary night, when the dim flame of hope is reignited.

In a vivid dream, Santiago is promised that he will feel the joy of Christmas once more, with one stipulation: he must act on three truths that he once held dear. Upon waking, Santiago feels a glimmer of hope—somewhere inside himself, buried deep beneath the pain, are once-cherished truths that can free him from the bonds of sorrow. As Santiago embarks on the road to remembrance, his journey is a heartfelt reminder of the reason for the season, and of the reality of Christ’s promise: “I will not leave you comfortless: I will come to you” (John 14:18). This warm story from bestselling author Toni Sorenson will remind you of what we cherish most, especially at Christmas.

This is the book we all want to curl up and read with a big mug of hot cocoa!

World War II Christmas Story by Dean Hughes

A historical fiction novel told from the perspective of a son fighting on the battlefields of Europe during World War II and his mother, struggling with worry and uncertainty about her soldier son while she tries to keep a semblenance of a normal, happy Christmas holiday back on the homefront.

Norma Hayes has always tried to make Christmas special for her family, but 1944 will make that more difficult with money being tight and wartime rationing making everything hard to come by. Aware of his mother’s hardships and the worry from having her eldest son at war, second son, Dennis, is determined to buy his mother a special gift this Christmas, a lavendar blue dress he hopes will bring her comfort as a symbol of special times gone by and the hope of a brighter future with the family reunited at war’s end.

Meantime, on a battlefield far from home in Holland with his 101st Airborne battalion, her soldier son catches a familiar scent of lavendar which briefly transports him back to the homefront to the perfume scent his mother wore, giving him a short respite and reuniting the family once again if only in his imagination.

Remembering The Joy Of Christmas by Anita Stansfield

A beloved season of festivity and tradition, Christmas heralds the creation of treasured family memories and inspires our hearts to turn to the tender recollections of the past. In Remembering the Joy of Christmas, more than a dozen of the finest authors in LDS fiction have joined together to craft a heartwarming compilation of their own personal accounts of Christmases gone by.

From the magic of one family’s inspiring Twelve Days of Christmas to a miraculous holiday spent in a hospital waiting room, each poignant story demonstrates a simple truth: it is not the lights or decorations that are central to a joyous holiday season. The true meaning of Christmas comes in focusing on the spirit of the season.

grandma’s BOOK:

Asleep On The Hay by Ben Sowards

It is Christmas Eve when a knock comes at the door of Paul’s family farmhouse. A small family is stranded due to a broken-down truck and seeks shelter for the evening. Paul’s grandfather not only welcomes them in, but offers them dinner and a bed for the night. Even though it is a season of giving, Paul’s heart is not filled with charity. It is the height of the Dust Bowl and food is scarce. Why should he share what little he has with strangers? Worse, in order to help the sick baby, Paul will have to sell his beloved calf to buy a part to fix the truck.

Angry, he retreats to the barn, where he sleeps and dreams of faraway Bethlehem. In his dream, he visits Mary and Joseph, and their newborn son, Jesus. The family offers Paul food and shelter and warmth extending to him the love and charity he lacks and teaching him of the true meaning of Christmas.

This beautiful retelling of the Nativity story that celebrates the timeless joy of Christmas and of welcoming a new baby into the world is now available as a Classic Board Book!

When Mary and Joseph’s child was born, the good tidings spread from the animals in the manger, to the shepherds in the fields, to the kings in distant lands, and even to the angels in the heavens! Filled with lyrical text and lush illustrations, this Classic Board Book is the perfect gift for baby’s first Christmas!

Itsy Bitsy Snowman by Jeffery Burton

A fun and playful seasonal twist on “The Itsy Bitsy Spider” makes this favorite nursery rhyme perfect for wintertime!

looking at the snowflakes softly falling down.
Out came his friends to lend a happy hand.
And everything was perfect in his winter wonderland.

Little ones will love this fresh winter spin on a classic nursery rhyme, as one little snowman sleds through a winter wonderland.

A Christmas Carol by Adam McKeown

Now even the youngest readers can enjoy Charles Dickens s classic Christmas tale in this beautifully illustrated picture-book version of the holiday favorite, simpler to read but with all the magic of Dickens s voice preserved.

Follow miserly Scrooge as he is whisked through the night by the ghosts of Christmas Past, Present, and Yet to Come in order to face his selfish treatment of Jacob Marley, Bob Cratchit, and Tiny Tim. Families will enjoy reading this shortened version of Dickens s story together, with its warm illustrations that capture every twist and turn.

Immortal Nicholas by Gleen Beck

Before he was Father Christmas he was simply a father. Thirteen-time #1 national bestselling author Glenn Beck realized years ago that somewhere along the way, his four children had become more focused on Santa than the meaning of Christmas. No matter how he tried, he could not redirect their attention away from presents and elves to the manger instead.

Glenn didn’t want to be the Grinch who spoiled the magic of Kris Kringle, so he had to find a unique way to turn his kids back toward the true meaning of Christmas. He decided the best place to start was by first turning Santa himself back toward Christ.

That was when one of America s best storytellers began to craft a tale that would change everything his kids thought they knew about Santa the incredible story he went on to tell them that Christmas Eve spans over a thousand years and explains the meaning behind the immortality and generosity of the man named Claus.

“The Immortal Nicholas” has now been expanded and reimagined into this novel for adults; a novel full of drama, history, legend, and heart. From the snowy mountains of Western Asia, to the deserts of Egypt, to Yemen s elusive frankincense-bearing boswellia trees, this is an epic tale that gives the legend of Santa a long overdue Christ-centered mission.
In this novel, Glenn Beck fundamentally transforms the figure that the world now mainly associates with shopping, all while staying true to the real story of the baby who brought redemption and salvation to the entire world.

Christmas Ideals 2015
