So when she tells him he’s a pirate hunter, and offers to prove it, Eric can’t resist the adventure. Thrown in the middle of the Spanish Main, Eric must quickly accept his skills, or else succumb to the horrors of the dreaded Willard Pirate Twins.

About the author . . .

Marty Reeder lives in Smithfield, Utah, with his wife and five children. He teaches creative writing and Spanish at the local high school. CARVE THE MARK

by Veronica Roth

2Cyra is the sister of the brutal tyrant who rules the Shotet people. Cyra’s currentgift gives her pain and power–something her brother exploits, using her to torture his enemies. But Cyra is much more than just a blade in her brother’s hand: she is resilient, quick on her feet, and smarter than he knows.

Akos is the son of a farmer and an oracle from the frozen nation-planet of Thuvhe. Protected by his unusual currentgift, Akos is generous in spirit, and his loyalty to his family is limitless. Once Akos and his brother are captured by enemy Shotet soldiers, Akos is desperate to get his brother out alive–no matter what the cost.

Then Akos is thrust into Cyra’s world, and the enmity between their countries and families seems insurmountable. Will they help each other to survive, or will they destroy one another?

Carve the Mark is Veronica Roth’s stunning portrayal of the power of friendship–and love–in a galaxy filled with unexpected gifts.

THE GIRL BEFORE

by JP Delaney

PLEASE MAKE A LIST OF EVERY POSSESSION YOU CONSIDER ESSENTIAL TO YOUR LIFE.1

The request seems odd, even intrusive–and for the two women who answer, the consequences are devastating.

Emma

Reeling from a traumatic break-in, Emma wants a new place to live. But none of the apartments she sees are affordable or feel safe. Until One Folgate Street. The house is an architectural masterpiece: a minimalist design of pale stone, plate glass, and soaring ceilings. But there are rules. The enigmatic architect who designed the house retains full control: no books, no throw pillows, no photos or clutter or personal effects of any kind. The space is intended to transform its occupant–and it does.

Jane

After a personal tragedy, Jane needs a fresh start. When she finds One Folgate Street she is instantly drawn to the space–and to its aloof but seductive creator. Moving in, Jane soon learns about the untimely death of the home’s previous tenant, a woman similar to Jane in age and appearance. As Jane tries to untangle truth from lies, she unwittingly follows the same paths with the same people, and experiences the same terror, as the girl before.

An enthralling psychological thriller with unexpected twists and turns, The Girl Before spins one woman’s seeming good fortune, and another woman’s mysterious fate, through a kaleidoscope of duplicity, death, and deception.

REALITY IS NOT WHAT IT SEEMS

by Carlo Rovelli

3What are the elementary ingredients of the world? Do time and space exist? And what exactly is reality? Theoretical physicist Carlo Rovelli has spent his life exploring these questions. He tells us how our understanding of reality has changed over the centuries and how physicists think about the structure of the universe today.

In elegant and accessible prose, Rovelli takes us on a wondrous journey from Democritus to Albert Einstein, from Michael Faraday to gravitational waves, and from classical physics to his own work in quantum gravity. As he shows us how the idea of reality has evolved over time, Rovelli offers deeper explanations of the theories he introduced so concisely in Seven Brief Lessons on Physics.

This book culminates in a lucid overview of quantum gravity, the field of research that explores the quantum nature of space and time, seeking to unify quantum mechanics and general relativity. Rovelli invites us to imagine a marvelous world where space breaks up into tiny grains, time disappears at the smallest scales, and black holes are waiting to explode–a vast universe still largely undiscovered.

Mystery

We have the perfect books for Halloween here for adults! Our Mystery section includes many spooky murder mystery books to keep you at the edge of your seat!

Here are some popular mysteries:

HIDE AWAY

by Iris Johansen

Iris Johansen’s beloved forensic sculptor Eve Duncan is back, in a life-and-death adventure that begins in a well-guarded hospital room in Carmel, California, and ends explosively on a remote mountaintop in the Scottish highlands. Change is on the horizon for Eve and her beloved Joe Quinn, intensifying the danger that surrounds them and the young girl they’ve sworn to protect, Cara Delaney. With Cara’s enemies on the move, Eve can’t stay in the hospital, no matter what the doctors say. Her protective instincts in full gear, she decides that their best chance of survival is to get out of the country, and she turns to her daughter Jane McGuire for a creative solution.

For years Jane has been avoiding an inevitable quest–to find a treasure thought to be buried in Scotland–but she has finally succumbed to the pressure of John MacDuff to track it down. Eve and Cara join her in the remote mountains, but soon realize that nowhere is far enough away from the ruthless enemies who are in pursuit.

An emotionally intense story of greed and power, of mothers and daughters and the bonds–of blood and of honor–that tie them together and keep them apart, Hide Away is a high-octane thrill ride for fans old and new.

AMONG THE WICKED

by Linda Castillo

Chief of Police Kate Burkholder is called upon by the sheriff’s department in rural upstate New York to assist on a developing situation that involves a reclusive Amish settlement and the death of a young girl. Unable to penetrate the wall of silence between the Amish and “English” communities, the sheriff asks Kate to travel to New York, pose as an Amish woman, and infiltrate the community.

Kate’s longtime love interest, State Agent John Tomasetti, is dead set against her taking on such an unorthodox assignment, knowing she’ll have limited communication–and even less in the way of backup. But Kate can’t turn her back, especially when the rumor mill grinds with disturbing accounts of children in danger. She travels to New York, where she’s briefed and assumes her new identity as a lone widow seeking a new life.

Kate infiltrates the community and goes deep undercover. In the coming days, she unearths a world built on secrets and a series of shocking crimes and finds herself alone… and trapped in a fight for her life.

END OF WATCH

by Stephen King

In room 217 of the Lakes Region Traumatic Brain Injury Clinic, something has awakened. Something evil. Brady Hartsfield, perpetrator of the Mercedes Massacre, where eight people were killed and many more were badly injured, has been in the clinic for five years, in a vegative state. According to his doctors, anything approaching a complete recovery is unlikely. But behind the drool and stare, Brady is awake, and in possesion of deadly new powers that allow him to wreak unimaginable havoc without ever leaving his hospital room.

Retired police detective, Bill Hodges, the unlikely hero of Mr. Mercedes and Finders Keepers, now runs an investigation agency with his partner, Holly Gibney-the woman who delivered the blow to Hartsfield’s head that put him on the brain injury ward. When Bill and Holly are called to a suicide scene with ties to the Mercedes Massacre, they find themselves pulled into their most dangerous case yet, one that will put their lives at risk, as well as those of Bill’s heroic young friend, Jerome Robinson and his teenage sister, Barbara. Brady Hartsfield is back, and planning revenge, not just on Hodges and his friend, but on an entire city.

With the End of Watch, Stephen King brings the Hodges trilogy to a sublimely terrifying conclusion, combining the detective fiction of Mr. Mercedes and Finders Keepers with the heart-pounding, supernatural suspense that has been his best selling trademark. The result is an unnerving book at human vulnerability and chilling suspense. No one does it better than King.

The Good Girls by Sara Shepard

Despite evidence to the contrary, the girls maintain their innocence and hope that his death is simply a coincidence. Unfortunately, Nolan is not the only person placed on their “payback” list, and someone is working to exert justice on their behalf. As each enemy experiences an untimely death, the girls race to find the killer before he or she can complete the mission. With each piece of evidence, however, the girls realize that the killer knows too much to be an outsider. Sometimes it is better to keep friends close, except for when one is a killer.

Finders Keepers by Stephen King

What would you do if you found a buried treasure? Thirteen-year-old Peter Saubers asks himself this very question when he finds an old trunk buried under a tree. His family has fallen on hard times following the economic downturn in 2008. Aside from a relatively small amount of money in the chest, there are over 100 handwritten notebooks. Peter realizes that they were penned by John Rothstein, a renowned novelist who was murdered long before Peter was born. Peter was one of the millions who had been touched by Rothstein’s works. Also influenced by the novels is Morris Bellamy, an obsessed fan who killed the author years ago and buried the trunk. He’s in prison for a different crime, and about to be paroled. Now the protagonists King introduced in “Mr. Mercedes”–Bill Hodges, Holly Gibney, and Jerome Robinson–are charged with protecting Peter and his family from Bellamy. VERDICT King’s many, many fans will want this, especially those who loved “Misery”, but the second volume in King’s projected trilogy will appeal to anyone who enjoys suspense and action, or anyone who finds enlightenment in reading about the internal struggle between right and wrong. It’s not necessary to have read the previous book to enjoy this one.

What no one knows is that Dominika is working for the CIA as Washington’s most sensitive penetration of SVR and the Kremlin.

As she expertly dodges exposure, Dominika deals with a murderously psychotic boss; survives an Iranian assassination attempt; escapes a counterintelligence ambush; rescues an arrested agent and exfiltrates him out of Russia; and has a chilling midnight conversation in her nightgown with President Putin. Complicating these risks is the fact that Dominika is in love with her CIA handler, Nate Nash, and their lust is as dangerous as committing espionage in Moscow. And when a mole in the SVR finds Dominika’s name on a restricted list of sources, it is a virtual death sentence…
